Do You Need a Break?

Are you tired? Do you find yourself tense and irritable? Do you wonder why you’re so angry all the time? Does your mind race from one busy task to another? Is it hard to sit still, get to sleep, or get up in the morning?

I’ve been there. It sounds like you may need a break. A break gets us away from the stress of trying to solve problems, many of which we have no control over. A break, even a short one, helps us get clarity. A break can take us out of the tight space in the middle of all our problems.

Take a walk. A leisurely walk. Ask yourself what you are noticing, what you hear, and what you smell. Think about what your senses key in on-a chirping bird, a faraway siren, the warmth of the sun. Focus on just those things.

Sit in a comfortable chair and take a few deep, cleansing breaths. Imagine you are breathing in the clear fresh air and blowing out the stress. Notice how your body begins to relax. Let it go.

Friends and loved ones can help with this as well. Choose someone who is empathetic and kind to share your stress with. They will be honoured that you trusted them. Many times, just saying what is on your mind relieves stress. It sounds crazy, but it’s true. Talking makes us feel better.

You might even try talking aloud about your feelings and thoughts when you are all alone. Some people like to do this while they are driving. Talking is good medicine even if no one hears but us.
