Relationship Therapy

happy people

Relationship therapy is for people in relationships, whether they are a spouse, significant other, adult child, parent, or sibling. Relationships can become challenging. Sometimes the only thing we know to do is to be quiet and stop all communications except those that are most necessary. Or, we use loud voices and anger in an attempt to be heard and understood.

Relationship therapy looks at the roadblocks to open communication and the unheard needs of each party. My goal is to eliminate what Jon Gottman calls the “Four Horseman of the Apocalypse”-criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling and contempt. I am a trained Gottman therapist. Jon Gottman’s research shows that to make a relationship last, a couple must become better friends, learn to manage conflict, and create ways to support each other’s hopes for the future. Aren’t these your goals?

The first session is with you both. In this session you will describe the history of your relationship and the important events that have occurred. The next two sessions are for each of you individually. Then in the fourth session forward we will always meet together.

My aim is to make each session enjoyable. So, let’s begin to work together now to defeat the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse restore friendship, learn to manage conflict, and create ways for you and your significant other to support each other’s hopes and dreams for the future.

Couples who actively participate in weekly relationship therapy sessions tend to make more changes, and make them more quickly.
